"The bright red, green, and yellow facade of the Gallery of West Indian
Art only hints at the colourful contents within.Guarded by a heavy door
that's opened only after visitors ring a buzzer, a lively collection of
Caribbean art - including a zoo full of outrageously painted animal carvings
- makes a visit to this Montego Bay shop a must. Presiding over the
menagerie is Liz de Lisser, an Englishwoman who moved to Jamaica with her
husband in the 1950's. de Lisser runs the gallery with help from
two of her three grown daughters. In addition to carvings, de Lisser's
is brimming with Caribbean art and paintings by noted Caribbean artists, handmade pottery,
tables and chairs. Truly unique collectibles offer something for
every personality."
"I used to be in the fashion business and would buy and hang paintings in my shop. I went to Haiti on holiday and was asked by a friend to bring back a crocheted dress. The contact for this was that grand old man of Haitian art, Issa. He sent me in the "Issa machine", in those days the only minibus in Haiti, and bright red, to get the dress. An English lady came along for the ride. She was buying paintings for a Christmas exhibition in London. I was fascinated and hastened back to Haiti to buy a small collection for my dress shop. Haiti was fabulous, mysterious, and the Oloffson Hotel, beautiful, decadent, and full of exciting people. I went to Haiti as often as I could, and Issa and his children became great friends."
