Errol Allen
Errol Allen was born on the 18th of August 1960 in Granville, St.James near Montego Bay, into a family of artists. He went to Granville All Age School until he was sixteen. From the age of six he was sketching and at the age of fifteen he began painting signs. Through meeting other artists he became interested in fine arts and began doing water colours in 1979. This is still his favourite medium although he also does pastels, oils and acrylics. Errol works with a small group of painters in which he is the leader and teacher. He has exhibited at the Chatham Hotel and the Montego Bay Parish Library. His paintings have been sold to the USA, Canada, England, Germany and Australia.Albert Artwell
Born on October 23 1942 in Catadupa, Jamaica. Artwell, a visionary, was first inspired to "illustrate" in a marvelously decorative calligraphy, various passages from the Scriptures. Later, he began painting pictures, usually religious scenes updated with elements of topical humour. A Crucifixion scene, for example, reveals among the onlookers...colonial types - including a medal-bedecked British Officer. His work is marked by a clear, concise imagery in fresh, flatly painted colours. Artwell's work has been exhibited all over the world, including the 1979 World Naive Exhibition at Hamiltons, London; the 1983 Smithsonian Institute's Traveling Exhibition; in 1984 at the Waggoner Gallery in Chicago; in 1985 at the Suti Gallery in Switzerland.
He has also had numerous exhibitions in his native Jamaica, including several showings with the Jamaica National Gallery.Alphanso Blake
Born 1971 in Jamaica, West Indies, Alphanso originally started working in oils in 1989 but has since moved on to acrylics - which he now uses
exclusively. He lives and works in the hills of St. Andrew from where he seems to get the inspiration for a lot of his stupendous landscapes.
Talent, dedication and perseverance aptly describe the virtue of Alphanso who has had numerous group exhibitions and two very successful solo showings to his credit. His most recent overseas appearances have been in Charleston, South Carolina, New York, Barbados and the Jamaican Consul in Washington D.C.
His works are constantly shown at various galleries in Jamaica and Trinidad and have held places in many distinguished private collections, both in
Jamaica and overseas, among these persons is popular American singer, Roberta Flack.
His name is renowned in Jamaica's national JCDC Festival of Art Competition, where he has been presented with three Certificates of Merit, two in 1996 and the other in 1998. He attended the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts and at the Edith Dalton James High School, he was
awarded "Most Outstanding Student" in Art for the year 1988-1989.
"Painting has taught me to be patient and to work carefully for what I want," Alphanso says. "One of my greatest motivators is the challenge of attaining seemingly unreachable goals." This approach he feels is largely due to his christian beliefs. Although clearly influenced by the works of Jamaican Art professionals such as Richard Hall, Barrington Watson and George Rodney, he thinks he has largely developed his artistic ideas by individual inspiration and God-given abilities. His subject matter ranges from Landscapes, to Seascapes, Abstracts, Semi-Abstracts and Figure Studies. Ultimately, Alphanso wishes to be an ambassador of Caribbean art worldwide.Bobart
Clifford Scott, alias Bobart, was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica. From an early age he wanted to be an artist. He spent many hours in school "doodling" in his books. He is a farmer, with a great interest in politics. His work often depicts the market women and the lush fruits & vegetation of the quiet countryside where he lives. He expresses his artistic nature in his extraordinary dress, sometimes wearing paintbrushes or a hibiscus in his hair. His work is in many collections, including some in the UK, Japan, Switzerland, the Caribbean, and the USA.Nelton Fisher

Susan Clare is a representational watercolour artist whose style emphasizes the lush tropical beauty of nature, seen under the dancing sunlight of Jamaica’s North Coast. Her recent work shows an expanded array of subject matter and motivation.Born and raised in England, Susan’s formal education was in sciences, but with an art teacher for a mother, and her interest in painting was maintained as a hobby. After moving to Jamaica in 1981, to pursue a career in scuba diving, Susan owned and ran a PADI 5 Star Scuba Training Centre in several prestigious resorts. Her artistic expressions lay dormant. In 1996, Susan revived her longtime interest in calligraphy and gold leaf illuminations, taking on part-time work designing menus and illustrating quotes and poems.
In March 1997, Susan decided to become a full-time artist and with self-study and the inspiring guidance of sculptress and watercolourist, Jannette Eyles, the dream became reality. She spent nine months working out of Jannette’s studio, painting the tropical plants, flowers, landscapes and still lifes of the luscious environment of rural Jamaica. Her aim was to let the viewer make a connection with the richness of nature and the values inherent in a simpler lifestyle. A year later, the artist started portraits of children, by commission. Nearly five years into her painting career, Susan has expanded her range of subject matter to include some nautical themes, from her past, and some spiritual ideas from a present and ongoing quest for personal growth. The latter incorporate gold work and calligraphic motifs and symbols, in an age old tradition, given a new flavour.
Susan finds herself drawn to the world within the picture frame. “The play of light over the subject is spellbinding, be it a still life collection of glass bottles, rustic stonework or the glowing complexion of a child.”
In November 1997, Susan showed a solo exhibition at Round Hill Hotel, which was extremely well received. Since then, she has participated in three group shows each year, in Montego Bay. Her work is also at Coyaba Resort, Mobay Hope, the Gallery of West Indian Art and Décor Gallery in Montego Bay, in Harmony Hall and Wassi Art, Ocho Rios, and at WB Framing in Kingston. Her work can be found in private collections in Jamaica, England, USA, Canada and Europe.
Maria Downes
Maria's original works are inspired by her travels in Jamaica, where she has maintained a second residence for many years. Maria offers original artwork, limited edition prints, as well as commissioned paintings and handpainted floorcloths and canvas rugs. Maria's paintings have been well received and have been accepted by several juried exhibitions including the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Concord Art Association, and the Cape Cod Art Association. She has also participated in many group shows, plus numerous, exciting One Woman Shows, most recently at the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens. This show, A New Twist on Old Fashioned Botanicals included many new works.
Maria's painting "Lilac Frenzy" was selected from among 300 entries for an Arnold Arboretum limited edition poster and the painting "Towards Truro" was featured in American Artist for its statement on conservation. Additionally, many of her original works are housed in Corporate Collections and have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad.Milton Messam
Born November 1 1944 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Messam attended school where he acquired the nickname "artist" as he was always drawing. In 1963, he took a correspondence course in Commercial and Fine Art. He worked as a hotel chef and also drove a taxi until 1985. He has now given up all unrelated work to concentrate on his painting. He works mainly in oil with palette knife and does exquisite water colours. His work is much in demand and forms part of many private collections throughout the world.Uta Sodtke
Uta Sodtke was born and educated in Germany and has lived in Toronto, Canada, since 1967. In her artistic beginnings she was gradually encouraged and influenced by her artist father. She was attracted by various media used in the creative process but has found watercolour to be the most challenging and rewarding media for her.
Paintings of vibrant colours and the lush scenery of the rolling hills and forest vegetation, are a direct result of her frequent travels to Jamaica, over the last thirty years. Her love of Montego Bay surroundings has inspired her to spend most of her available time in Jamaica, where she paints scenes readily recognizable for most people.
Uta's work is internationally collected, such as in Europe, the Caribbean, and North America.Stefan Spath
Born in Germany and previously living throughout Europe, Africa and Australasia, Stefan has resided in Jamaica for over 5 years. It is perhaps from these experiences that Stefan has come to fully embrace the Jamaican culture. This is clearly demonstrated in his artwork which passionately reflects the vibrancy of the colors of the Caribbean. Stefan’s love of painting is inspired with flair and design from his career in the culinary field. His original entry into the art world has resulted in commissioned pieces existing within private collections around the world.
Strong – Passionate – Vibrant – Stefan’s work pervades the senses, evoking and provoking thoughtful commentary. This young man’s work is a must for lovers of art and Caribbean culture alike. Stefan’s series of Caribbean Nudes & Abstracts (shown below) will be on show at Round Hill Hotel & Villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from August 3rd – 10th 2004.Eldon Spence

He is married, with three children.Elizabeth White

Acrylics have become her favorite medium, after first exploring oils, watercolor and gouache. Strongly influenced by Eastern philosophies, she is a yoga teacher and student of tai chi. The subject matter for her paintings range from Jamaican rural scenes to more symbolic, surrealistic images. Each is individually done by hand, and they are not computer generated, or mass produced.David Elliott Wilson
