MARIA DOWNES

Maria's inspiration to paint evolves from the various emotional responses that she has to everyday life; people, landscapes, flowers, patterns, colours, mood and light.  Maria's original works are inspired by her travels to Jamaica, where she has maintained a second residence for many years.  Maria's paintings have been well received and have been acccpted by several juried exhibitions, including the Fitchburg Art Museum, American Painters in Paris, the Concord Art Association, and numerous others in Boston and New York.  She has also participated in many group shows, as well as numerous exciting One Woman Art Shows, most recently in Negril, Jamaica.  Maria's painting "Lilac Frenzy" was selected from among 300 entries for Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum limited edition poster, and the painting "Towards Truro" was featured in American Artist for its statement on conservation.  Additionally, many of her original works are housed in Corporate Collections and have been exhibited throughout the US and abroad.
Maria paints to evoke the feeling that life is art.  She says:  "
I view my painting as a bridge for emotional connection. It is about my process, of how I express beauty; the sensual simplicity of form. I hope through my painting people will find their own sense of beauty. Painting for me is about change found in the natural rhythms of nature: be it figurative, landscape or still life. I am interested in light and patterns. I like to explore the relationship of color and mood. I am an expressive realist. In my paintings my inspiration comes from a place deep within. Sometimes it is fragmented by my thoughts, what I see and experience, but in the end it moves me to paint.  This feeling keeps me searching and allows me to create connections with the world through art.  For me Life is Art.
