Duffaut, Prefete - Haiti - Ref# DUF 2

Oil on Board / 16"x20"

Prefete Duffaut was born in Jacmel, Haiti, in 1923.  It is said that his youth was marked by personal unhappiness - an unhappiness he sought to escape by painting.  Under the guidance of Rigaud Benoit he became a professional artist.  In 1950-51 he painted "The Temptation of Our Lord" and "Native Street Scene Procession" murals in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince.
He is best-known for his imaginary mountainous landscapes, which are often interspersed with serpentine roads and densely populated with crowds of people.  His work has been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe and Japan, and forms an essential part of any Haitian art collection.
Duffaut died in 2012.
