Andre Normil was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on September 26, 1934 and joined the Centre d'Art in 1951. He was a sharp-eyed observer of the subtleties of Haitian culture and his paintings were often populated with likenesses of friends. He was married to the Haitian painter Francoise Eliassaint, herself a highly accomplished artist who in 1982 became a member of the Saint Soleil group. For decades, Normil worked in a room on the ground floor of the Galerie Issa. Andre Normil, an acknowledged Haitian Master, passed away on May 2, 2014.
